What is AAC?

There are many options when it comes to AAC technology, and our therapists will try a few to see what works best for your child.  Once a system is chosen, we will train your child and you on how to maximize communication in all aspects of daily life.

The role of the speech-language pathologist in AAC

Communication is based on language and language can be non-verbal or verbal.  Many times a child may exhibit negative behaviors when they are unable to communicate basic wants or needs.  However, these behaviors are messages.

By trialing AAC options, a whole world of communication possibilities may be opened for a child.  For example, a tablet with a program using pictures or word options may be recommended if your child has adequate arm and hand function. However, if your child has limited mobility, an eye gaze device may be a perfect option.

There are several different ways that a speech-language pathologist at Skills on the Hill may be able to help your child communicate easier, but the first step is reaching out to us for an appointment.

Let us help your child maximize their communication skills

The ability to communicate is essential to development and quality of life. We are here on that journey with you and your child. Not only will we assess your child to determine the correct AAC device for their treatment, but we will also train you and your child on its operation.

Let us help your child learn how to communicate in a way that feels more natural to them. Don’t hesitate to contact us at Skills on the Hill Pediatric Therapy in Washington, DC or Arlington, VA today.
