Speech Articulation Problems

Many children learn how to produce sounds correctly, but some may not. There is no known cause for several speech articulation problems. An articulation problem involves trouble making correct speech sounds. Speech sounds can be added, changed, replaced, or left off, making it difficult for others to understand what your child is saying.

It is normal for children to make speech errors often. For example, some children may pronounce the “w” sound for an “r” and say “wabbit” for “rabbit” or may leave sounds out of words, such as “nana” for “banana.” These speech errors can be common when the child is young. But when this happens past a certain age, it would be clear the child has speech articulation problems.

How Are Speech Articulation Problems Identified?

Speech-language pathologists conduct formal articulation assessments to record sound errors and an oral mechanism examination to determine whether the muscles of the mouth are working correctly.

They also evaluate the child’s language development to determine overall communication functioning. If they identify that the sound is not appropriate for the child’s age or if it is not a feature of a dialect or accent, they may recommend speech therapy.

What Happens During Articulation Therapy Sessions?

Our speech-language pathologists will develop a personalized treatment plan to improve the articulation of individual sounds or reduce errors in the production of sound patterns.

Articulation therapy may involve repetition activities, tongue exercises, speaking in front of a mirror, and practicing speaking while playing.
