Attention challenges in children may present as inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsiveness. These self-regulation issues can impact functional performance and social interactions at home, in school, and in community activities.
Our team of occupational therapists are skilled in using various programs to assist children in developing an awareness for their state of arousal and learning how to use strategies to adjust their level of arousal as needed in daily life. Strategies may look like integrating movement breaks into daily routines, eating crunchy snacks while doing homework, or engaging in deep breathing exercises to calm the body and mind.
In addition to having trouble with sustaining attention and regulating activity level, children with diagnosed ADD and ADHD also can have challenges with memory and executive functioning. This can sometimes impact their ability to plan, organize, sequence, and execute tasks at both home and school. The child may struggle with getting ready in the morning and remembering what to bring to school or require support in planning and completing projects that involve many steps and critical thinking.
At Skills on the Hill, we use a strengths-based model in our work with children who have a diagnosis of ADHD. We accept children for who they are and use a neurodivergent- affirming approach to care. Our team of therapists prides themselves on focusing on inclusion and advocacy for their clients.

ADD, ADHD, and treatments
Many doctors or other professionals may recommend occupational or speech-language therapy as part of a treatment plan for young children diagnosed with ADD or ADHD.
Children with attentional challenges may have difficulty interacting with their peers and struggle with making lasting friendships. Skills on the Hill often works with children in both individual and small groups to trial, teach, and practice self-regulation skills. Our summer group programs provide a fun setting to practice skills in a smaller environment that can be transferred to school, home, and the community.
They build skills and develop friendships simultaneously!
Our specialized treatment plans also address executive functioning skills such as planning, sequencing, and adjusting or modifying activities to be successful. Progress with these skill areas helps children learn to stay focused when they get distracted or when they are completing a task that does not have their full interest or attention.
