Dyspraxia, or dysfunction in praxis, can affect the fine and gross motor skill development of children. Praxis is comprised of three parts:
- Ideation – having an idea of what you want to do
- Motor planning – the sequence of motor actions involved in a task
- Execution – performing the motor sequence with appropriate coordination
Praxis skills are used in all aspects of life. From self-help tasks to writing, to playing on a playground and performing sports. Children who exhibit dyspraxia and present with motor skill delays tend to require support to approach new and unfamiliar tasks.
In addition to these common areas of difficulty, it is also possible for praxis difficulties to occur with speech, articulation, and processing. Apraxia is a term used when children present with praxis issues that impact speech skills.
Fortunately, our team of physical, occupational, and speech-language therapists can help.
Our therapists will first obtain a complete medical and developmental history. Then parents will complete questionnaires in order to identify specific challenges the child encounters at home and in other settings. Last, the child participates in several standardized tests and unstructured tasks to assess different motor skill areas.
