Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder that occurs when a developing brain sustains trauma. This can occur during pregnancy but may also happen during delivery or shortly after birth.

The extent and presentation of cerebral palsy can vary from child to child. For example, some children may experience difficulty meeting early gross motor milestones, using their hands to perform functional tasks, eating safely or independently, or speaking clearly.  Some children might have their upper and/or lower extremities both affected, or some might just experience some slight weakness on one side of the body.

If your child has not yet been diagnosed with cerebral palsy but you suspect he or she may be showing signs, please contact your pediatrician to discuss and schedule an appointment as soon as possible.  The physician may order specific tests and perform an in-depth physical examination to test your child’s reflexes and motor functions.

If your child has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, our therapists can help!

Many children who have cerebral palsy are referred by their physician or another medical professional for physical, occupational, and/or speech-language therapy.  Each child’s treatment plan is unique and can be individualized according to their strengths and specific areas of need.
