Speech-Language Therapy

Skills on the Hill Pediatric Therapy offers speech-language therapy services at our Washington, DC and Arlington, VA locations. Speech and language pathologists or therapists work with children to address communication challenges that impact participation at school, home, and in the community.

The main goal of speech and language therapy is to help children communicate with peers and adults, as well as understand and interact with them successfully. From developing skills to increase vocabulary, to enhancing conversation skills, our speech and language pathologists support children of all ages on a wide range of skills.

Areas Addressed in Speech-Language Therapy:

Language disorders

Can impact the formation of words, sentences, and sound combinations as well as content (meaning) and function (social pragmatic language).

Articulation difficulties

Characterized by sound substitutions, omissions, additions, or distortions that diminish a child’s intelligibility when speaking (e.g., a child who says “ton” for “sun”).

Fluency difficulties

Characterized by an interruption in the flow of speaking, marked by atypical rate, rhythm, and repetition of sounds, syllables, words, and/or phrases. Fluency issues can sometimes present as a stutter.

Processing disorders

Result from impairment of the auditory system can cause problems in detection, discrimination, identification, comprehension, and perception of auditory signals.

Voice difficulties

Characterized by abnormal vocal quality due to deficits in pitch, volume, resonance, and/or duration.

Oral motor dysfunction

Involve strength, coordination, awareness, and movement of the tongue, jaw, cheeks, and lips. Oral motor dysfunction may occur when the brain attempts to send signals to the mouth muscles, but the muscles do not receive or interpret the signals properly.

Feeding dysfunction

Result from underlying weaknesses or underdevelopment of oral musculature, oral motor skill delays, tethered oral tissues (lip tie/tongue tie), sensory aversions, or swallowing difficulties.

When a child experiences speech and language challenges or other associated weaknesses, it can sometimes lead to self-esteem problems, frustration, or trouble with interacting with peers.  Through evaluation, our therapists can pinpoint any underlying issues your child might have and assemble a comprehensive treatment plan to get them on track to make progress.
