Most children love their first visit and ask when they will be returning!
Our team tries their best to make sessions fun and disguises activities as play as much as possible. Sometimes this involves incorporating the child’s interests into therapeutic activities to increase motivation. This could include using superheroes, princesses, or pirates.
It is important that children do not think they are going to be seeing a “doctor” but instead an adult that has a lot of fun things to do. For children that might be aware they are experiencing some difficulties, it may also be appropriate to say something like “you are going to meet a person that is going to help us figure out what things you are really good at doing and how to help you with things that might be tricky. It is important that you try your best will all the tasks because this person is sort of a detective and really good at teaching kids tricks to make life easier”.
If you need any more suggestions with preparing your child for the first visit, please so not hesitate to ask!
