October is ACC Awareness Month

AAC Month Blog – From Denise Colombo – SLP
October is AAC Awareness Month! AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. This encompasses all forms of communication and is usually categorized by low tech (signs, pictures, gestures) and high tech (speech generating devices) modes of communication.
AAC does not start and end in speech therapy sessions and it is essential that caregivers, educators and other professionals facilitate use across all settings. Technology allows for children to communicate basic wants and needs, interact socially, and engage in learning.
For caregivers and children just starting to use AAC or for those who are interacting with AAC users in school or the community, books can be helpful to increase acceptance and provide education.
Below are some books that feature AAC use that you may find helpful.
“Lucas the Lion Loves The Tiny Talker” by Ryan Rollen & “A Day with No Words “ by Tiffany Hammond

“Elsie with the Great Smile” by Kristen Cagadas (one of our SOTH families!)

“Me and My AAC” by Tabitha Cabrera, Michael Barnett & “Artie is Awesome” by Deidra Darst
